Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate press tonnage for deep drawing?
Direct answer: Estimate the blanking force (perimeter × thickness × shear strength) and the drawing force (π × cup diameter × thickness × tensile strength × a factor of about 1.5), take the larger, and multiply by a safety factor (typically 1.3). Convert newtons to tonnes by dividing by about 9,807.
How do I calculate the blank diameter for a deep drawn cup?
Direct answer: For a cylindrical cup with a flat bottom, the blank diameter is D = √(d² + 4dh − 1.72dr), where d is cup diameter, h is height and r is the bottom corner radius. Then divide D by d to get the draw ratio and compare it with the material’s limiting draw ratio.
How much does a deep drawn blank weigh?
Direct answer: Blank weight is π × (D/2)² × t × ρ, with D and t in the same length unit and ρ the material density. For a 1.0 mm thick, 80 mm DC04 blank the weight is about 39 g; multiply by your order quantity for total material weight.

The formulas and limits in our tools are anchored to the material properties measured by the standards below. We validate each tool result against a trial draw on the real material.
- ASTM E646 — Standard Test Method for Tensile Strain-Hardening Exponents (n) of Metallic Sheet Materials. The n-value sets how much a wall can thin before necking.
- ASTM E517 — Standard Test Method for Plastic Strain Ratio (r) of Sheet Metal. The r-value predicts earing in drawn cups.
- DIN 8584 — Manufacturing processes, forming: classification of deep drawing operations and their subgroups.
- ISO 20482 — Metallic materials: Erichsen cupping test, a formability measure complementary to LDR.
- Wikipedia: Anisotropy — explains the r-value and why earing directions form.
